Vitra's Akari lamps were designed in 1951 by the Japanese-American artist and designer Isamu Noguchi, after a trip to Japan, specifically to Gifu, famous for the artisanal manufacture of parasols and lanterns made of Washi paper, obtained from the bark of the mulberry tree.

The eclectic designer applied his sculptural style to the tradition of wooden and Washi paper lamps, creating over 100 models of pendant lamps, floor lamps and table lamps, with an extremely evocative name: Akari Light Sculptures. Akari is a Japanese word similar to light, which evokes light and lightness at the same time.
