About 100 million years ago the evolutionary history of the Apoidea began (which also includes the honey bee) which all have a single progenitor: a small wasp named Melittosphex burmensis. This insect is considered their progenitor because it is the oldest among those found in fossils dating back 100 million years and has hairs on its body that were used to trap pollen and collect it. They don't have the fluff to protect themselves from the cold but to trap pollen and then collect it and transport it to the nest to feed their offspring.
