Spicy chili peppers have been used as a food since ancient times. From the testimony of archaeological finds we know that already in 5,500 BC. it was known in Mexico, present in those areas as a cultivated plant, and was the only spice used by the Indians of Chile and Mexico.
Chili pepper arrived in Europe with Christopher Columbus who brought it from the Americas on his second voyage, in 1493. Since he landed on a Caribbean island, he most likely encountered a Capsicum chinense, of the Scotch Bonnet or Habanero varieties, the most widespread on the islands.
