It was the year 1831 when he was born in Knoxville, in the state of Georgia (USA). At seventeen he was already studying at the School of Botanical Medicine in the same state. Later, John Pemberton sold several patented medicinal products, among which were Dr. Sandrof” or “Eureka Oil”. As an inventor, entrepreneur, chemist and pharmaceutical, Pemberton had direct access to the world of drugs such as cocaine imported from Peru, morphine and marihuana. Some biographies describe him as a southern US army doctor who was "highly addicted" to morphine. In 1880 Pemberton officially patented a very stimulating coca wine inspired by Angelo Mariani's invention. He later founded the Pemberton Chemical Company.
