Glazed, coloured, covered with sprinkles, rounded and filled with cream, dusted with icing sugar, filled in the most disparate ways: donuts (or doughnuts) are one of the most famous American desserts in the world, fried donuts with melting dough and yielding to the bite, enriched with different ingredients. For fans of the hit animated sitcom The Simpsons these sweet rings will always be "Homer's donuts", for passionate travelers the association with the Dunkin' brand or the unmistakable green and red sign of Krispy Kreme will be immediate, but the story of sweets has much older origins, partly still shrouded in mystery.
