Farfalle are a type of dried pasta. The name is due to their shape, which makes them similar to a butterfly. This type of butterfly-shaped pasta has been attested since the 16th century in Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna, and is now widespread throughout the national territory, in particular in Ligurian cuisine, which offers them with the traditional basil pesto seasoning.

In Emilia-Romagna there is a variant known as strichetti or ribbons, which differ from farfalle in that they are a homemade fresh pasta product.
