The Leica III camera model was introduced by its creator Oskar Barnack in 1933 in parallel production to the Leica II. Over the following years, various variations and camera models were introduced with notable improvements. The Leica III used a rangefinder coupled to the camera body that was separate from the viewfinder, which was set for a 50mm lens. With different lenses, tele or wide angle, the viewfinder also had to be changed. To have a viewfinder that was able to "read" any lens that was screwed onto the camera, we had to wait for the release of the Leica M3 in 1954.
