The koi carp (锦鲤, Nishikigoi in Japanese) has its origins in the 19th century in Niigata Prefecture. Originally imported from China, carp (koi) in Japan had no particular color and were called Magoi. Their main use was to be placed in the stagnant water of the rice fields with the aim of keeping the bottom clean as well as eating insects and larvae that in some way could have affected the crops.
