PALM

Palms (Arecaceae Bercht. & J.Presl, 1820) are a family of monocotyledonous plants belonging to the Arecales order. This family includes 182 genera with around 2,500 species, spread mostly in tropical and subtropical climates. They are one of the few families of tree-like monocotyledons, despite lacking secondary growth, i.e. lacking secondary meristematic tissues of the cambial or phellogen type. The wood of the Arecaceae derives from a modification of a primary tissue, the parenchyma.
