Already in 1834 Johann Sebastian Staedtler, nephew of Friedrich Staedtler, began producing a new type of pencil. He managed to improve the common sanguine pencil so that "it could be sharpened as finely as graphite pencils", to obtain fine lines and adhere better to paper. Thanks to his innovation, Johann Sebastian Staedtler not only became part of history as a manufacturer of graphite pencils, but also as the inventor of the oil chalk-based wooden colored pencil. In 1835 Johann Sebastian STAEDTLER laid the foundations for today's STAEDTLER Group.
