The first jigsaw puzzle was created in England in 1767 by the cartographer and tutor (responsible for the education of children) John Spilsbury (1739-1769). It was he who had the brilliant idea of fixing a world map to a wooden board and then separating the individual nations with a hacksaw, faithfully following their borders. What came out was a puzzle that his students had to solve, recomposing the map.
Unexpectedly, his puzzle was an enormous success, so much so that Spilsbury created maps with increasingly specific, but always geographical, themes using the same technique. Thus the map of Europe, Asia and all the other continents appeared.
