The invention of the bicycle can be attributed to the German Baron Karl von Drais in 1817. The bicycle is therefore more than 200 years old! The name chosen by the baron for the bike was Laufmachine (racing machine) but many in honor of him called it draisine or draisienne in French. In Italy it made its debut in 1819. The draisine was built of wood, two wheels and no pedals: to move you had to push yourself with your legs, walking while sitting. The rather rudimentary steering consisted of a lever instead of a handlebar.
