The world's first railway (40 km), hauled by a locomotive, was built for freight between Stockton and Darlington in the north
of England, opened in September 1825. It transported ore to the port of Stockton-on-Tess, where the ore was loaded onto ships for sea transport. 56 km long, it was designed for the transport of goods from the port of Liverpool to Manchester, but was successful for passenger transport.
